Do you remember my unique shape bathroom floor? If you don't, see the picture on this post to remind you. =) The first time I saw the bathroom, I know I need to make my own rug. It is hard and near impossible to find a rug which cover the floor around the toilet seat and the triangle floor in front of the shower door. So I looked up online for homemade rug idea. There are a lot of rug idea from braiding a long rope and sew it together, shag rug with rug mat, and so on. Then I found this site. The rug made in this site is an oval rug but I love the idea of no-sew and upcycle old unused t-shirts. As a plus, we have couple old t-shirts that we want to donate so I already have the material at hand. My landlord also has several t-shirts he wants to donate - and he let me to reuse it. Nice! So, with customized steps from the link, I made my own customized-shape rug. I posted the step by step tutorial on this No Sew Rug Braiding Tutorial page to shorten this post.

I used total 10.5 t-shirts for this rug: 2 small size, 2 medium size and the rest are large size. I don't remember how many hour total I spend to finish this. Maybe it's around 10 - 12 hours braiding + couple hours to cut the t-shirts. In the end I came up with this pile of stripes. It's not surprising I have more white stripes than coloured stripes. I used more white t-shirts than coloured t-shirts. With the white stripes number matches the coloured stripes, I decided to always use two white stripes and two random coloured stripes. To make sure the coloured striped is mixed, I scramble them before start using it. Only sometimes I changed the coloured stripe for another colour to make sure the colour is spread out. The result is not very bad.
This is my bathroom floor originally looked like
After I put my temporary rug (a towel and a rectangle rug from Ikea)
Finally, with my homemade rug
It looks so much better! It is soft and absorb the water perfectly. Importantly, it covers nicely the area we step on. I was worried a bit with the feeling of the rug on the foot. The rug is not flat. It is bumpy because of its braid. I am also super ticklish. Fortunately, my husband loves the texture of the rug and I never feel ticklish while stepping on the rug. We both also love the colour combination: white - grey - black with occasionally bright orange. My only regret is I don't have enough coloured stripe for the last few braids. So the small corner is all white - super white. :P
My conclusion, if you don't mind the texture of the final rug and you have an unique shaped bathroom floor you want to cover, you can braid your own rug. It's fine if you don't have many old t-shirt. You can buy cheap t-shirt. Just... don't buy one with a lot of print.
