The kitchen/ crafting room idea

Today I am going to share my idea about my kitchen/ craft room. As I mentioned yesterday, I decided to move my long-yearned-craft-table to the kitchen. Yup, I had always wanted to have a table dedicated for crafting (sewing, le cartonnage, scrap booking, etc). I couldn't have it in our previous apartment in Salt Lake City because the apartment was smaller. In this apartment I knew I finally can have one. Yay!! \^o^/

The look of the kitchen from the 'Hobbit cave' entrance
As you can see, our kitchen room is big. Sadly, we have tiny counter space and cabinet. This absolutely won't be enough to store all of the cooking/ baking stuff I had. Not to mention there is almost no preparation space once I put my dish rack on the counter top. Ideally I want to have a counter top near the stove where I can put my cooking ingredients. As you can see, there is no way for me to have it. There is a sink beside the stove! I have never seen one like this and never think I will like it - but I will live with it for now.

To counter attack all the problem I had with this spacious but lacking counter space kitchen, I decided to get a bakers rack (Yay! I can cross one of the item in my wishing list :P ) and a rolling kitchen cart. I am planning to put the baker' rack against the wall beside the kitchen closet. The kitchen cart, I will store it inside the closet when I am not using it and pull it out when I am cooking. With the rolling kitchen cart stored away when it's not in use, I can keep the kitchen spacious. Having extra counter top without having something in the middle of the room that cut the flow from living room to the bedroom is nice. I am proud of my own idea ^_^

Whitmor Supreme Chrome Baker's Rack
After looking around, I decided on Whitmor Supreme Chrome Baker's Rack. I like the wire on the back. I can imagine myself hanging couple baking tools with the S-hook I got from Taiwan. I can also put our microwave on the top rack. I got it from Target (don't forget the $15 off for order above $75). I received the baker's rack yesterday and last night my husband helped me assembly it. He was pessimist that we can put the microwave on the top rack. However, last night we proved that yes, we can put the microwave there! This morning I had moved some of my baking ingredients on the rack and our cereal as well. I also able to hide Roomba under the baker's rack . I can't wait till my husband coming home tonight to see where the room for our robot slave is. XD

Extra Large Kitchen Cart
I ordered the kitchen island yesterday on Walmart. We looked into a lot of kitchen island. Originally I wanted to buy Mainstay Kitchen Island Cart. However, my husband said the width (32 inches) may be too small especially since I want to put my spices rack on the island. In the end we decided on Extra Large Kitchen Cart (48 inches). The colour is not the original colour I want to match my craft table: white. The price is also almost twice the original white kitchen cart I chose. However, I believe this will still looks nice with the rest of the appliances and my white-themed craft table. And, it also have a knife rack to hold our big Chinese knives (the only knives we have). Don't forget about the cabinet as well. At the moment the table is scheduled to arrive next Tuesday. I can't wait till we spend 2 hours to 2 days (based on the review) assembling this kitchen cart. Then, I can store our dishes on one of the cabinet and my baking tools in the other cabinet.

My design for the craft table
For my crafting table, I am planning to use some white cubical storage system as the foot of my table. My idea was to use (1) 3x3 cubical storage, (2) 3x2 cubical storage, and (2) 3x1 cubical storage. Then for the table top, I am planning to reuse the scrap woods my apartment's home owner stacks beside his garage. He told me the other day that I am welcomed to reuse those wood pieces for my craft purpose. I haven't spending time looking through the nice pile of scrap woods. However, from my quick observation, the wood pieces are around 5 inches x 6 inches. It's small but big enough so that I don't have to stick a bunch of them together to make around 60 inches x 36 inches table top. I can't wait to start this project next week. I believe it will make a nice and unique table top. Btw, the idea of using cubical storage for craft table is purely mine. Interestingly, when I googled for the cubical storage, I found quite a lot of people using the same idea for their craft table. Is this mean I really have the brain of a crafter? :P

I looked around for a cheap cubical and consistent in size so I can combine different cubical without having different height. The one I chose is the ClosetMaid Cubeicals. I bought one 3x1 cubical storage last week along with our TV stand from Target. It's already assembled and now I am using it for another clothes storage in our bedroom closet. Why? Because yesterday I found the price of 3x2 is $20 more expensive than the 3x3. It's crazy. So, instead of buying (2) 3x2 cubical storage to make my ideal table, I decided to use (3) 3x3 cubical storage. It saved us at least $40 + the price of the 3x1 cubical storage. The layout of the cubical won't be the same as my original design but it will work. I can switch the back of the last column of 3x3 cubical on the sides to face the inside of the table. This arrangement will let me grab the items I use most while working on a project without walking around the table. These cubical is scheduled to arrive next Tuesday as well. I can't wait till it's here so I can move the pile of the craft boxes into the craft table.

Btw, this is the sneak peak of our kitchen/craft room this Monday. I will take picture when it's completely done. I promise :)
It's a messy kitchen now. The foam on the middle of the room is the foam our homeowner gave us to use to insulate the door in the living room

This morning I had cleaned up the boxes and move the foam to make a space
Cheers,
Sherls
